Abstract

A STUDY ON THE IMPACT OF YOUNG PEOPLE’S INTOLERANCE OF UNCERTAINTY ON THEIR JOB SEARCH BEHAVIORS

Abstract

Job search behavior, a key determinant of employment, broadly refers to the effort to explore existing job opportunities. It is widely recognized that this process, characterized by high uncertainty, is influenced by personality traits. One such trait is intolerance of uncertainty, which reflects individuals’ cognitive, emotional, and behavioral responses to ambiguous situations. This study investigates the hypothesized negative impact of intolerance of uncertainty on job search behavior. A survey was conducted among individuals aged 15–29 residing in Istanbul who were actively seeking employment, regardless of their current work status. Regression analysis was employed to examine the effect of intolerance of uncertainty on job search behavior, while ANOVA tests were used to assess whether these variables differed across demographic groups. Contrary to expectations, the findings revealed no significant relationship between intolerance of uncertainty and job search behavior, suggesting that this personality trait does not influence job-seeking activity. However, the results indicated that both intolerance of uncertainty and job search behavior vary significantly according to demographic variables.
