Artificial Intelligence Policy

Journal of Akdeniz İletişim acknowledges the growing importance of artificial intelligence (AI) and its potential to support authors throughout the research and writing process. The Journal embraces advancements in this area, especially those that facilitate idea generation, expedite discovery, support analysis and synthesis, enhance language clarity, or assist in structuring manuscripts.
Large Language Models (LLMs) and other Generative AI technologies offer transformative opportunities in the creation and dissemination of scholarly work. However, these tools cannot replace human creativity or critical thinking. This policy has been developed to support authors, reviewers, and editors in making informed and ethical decisions regarding the use of AI technologies.
For Authors
Use of Assistive AI
The use of AI tools aimed at improving an author’s own writing—such as grammar checkers or tools that refine language or structure—is considered assistive. Such use does not require disclosure. However, authors remain fully responsible for ensuring the accuracy and academic integrity of their manuscripts.

Use of Generative AI
If AI tools are used to generate content—including text, images, references, or any form of scholarly material—this must be explicitly disclosed at the time of submission. Authors are expected to:
** Cite original sources rather than AI tools when referencing scholarly work.
** Clearly specify in the manuscript (in the Methods or Acknowledgements section, as appropriate) which AI tools were used and for what purpose.
** Thoroughly review and verify any AI-generated content for accuracy, appropriateness, and the validity of citations.
** Ensure the work does not contain plagiarized material, especially text that may have been inadvertently reproduced by an LLM.
** Confirm that no fabricated content, including non-existent sources or factual inaccuracies, is present in the manuscript.
** Importantly, AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT) should not be credited as authors.
While disclosed use of generative AI will not result in automatic rejection, the Journal of Akdeniz İletişim reserves the right to reject any submission where generative AI was used inappropriately or without proper disclosure. Inappropriate uses include the generation of false or misleading content, plagiarism, or improper attribution of ideas. The corresponding author must upload the Journal of Akdeniz University Faculty of Communication Generative AI Use Declaration Form with wet signature during the article submission.

For Reviewers and Editors
Use of AI Assistance
Reviewers may utilize AI tools to improve the clarity of their written feedback. However, they retain full responsibility for the content, accuracy, and constructiveness of their reviews. Editors, who are responsible for overseeing the integrity of journal content, may use AI to identify potential reviewers, but not for decision letters or editorial summaries involving unpublished work.

Use of Generative AI

Reviewers must not use tools like ChatGPT to draft full peer-review reports. Doing so is considered inappropriate and will result in disqualification from future reviewing opportunities. Additionally, any reviews generated in this way will be excluded from editorial decisions.

Editors are also prohibited from using generative AI to create editorial content related to submitted manuscripts.

Handling Suspected Misuse

If a reviewer suspects that a manuscript or review includes undisclosed or improper use of generative AI, they should raise the issue with the journal’s Editor. Editors may assess the concern in light of this policy or consult with their representative at Journal of Akdeniz İletişim for further guidance.

In the event of suspected misuse of AI tools in a published article, the journal, in coordination with its editorial leadership, will initiate an investigation aligned with the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) guidelines.
