The functioning of conceptual prototypes in social studies: A framework based on empirical research

Abstract

Conceptual prototypes represent the central tendency and idealized version of a category. These structures enable students in social studies to make sense of complex social phenomena and establish cognitive connections. Although previous research has consistently focused on children's or students' concept construction and learning processes, the role of conceptual prototypes in education and content areas such as social studies is often overlooked. Synthesizing and discussing current empirical evidence, this study provides educators with insights into understanding the role of conceptual prototypes, developing instructional strategies aligned with students' cognitive processes, recognizing the connections between prototypes and complex thinking pathways, and informing interventions. Additionally, it highlights the necessity of integrating conceptual prototype-oriented pedagogy into social studies.

Sosyal bilgilerde kavramsal prototiplerin işleyişi: Ampirik araştırmalara dayalı bir çerçeve
