Abstract

Abstract
Introduction: This study was conducted to examine the effect of using virtual reality goggles on anxiety, depression and caregiving burden in relatives of palliative care patients.
Methods: The study was conducted in a training and research hospital between May 2023 and January 2024 using a quasi-experimental design with a pretest-posttest with control group. The study involved 42 patient relatives (21 control group, 21 intervention group) who accompanied their patients in the palliative care unit. Data were collected using a descriptive information form, Beck Depression Scale, Beck Anxiety Scale and Zarit Burden Interview. Participants in the intervention group were shown videos accompanied by relaxing music using virtual reality goggles in a total of 10 sessions for a week.
Results: Beck Depression (p=0.025; Z=-2.247) and Beck Anxiety (p=0.017; Z=-2.392) scales posttest scores of the intervention group decreased significantly compared to the pre-test scores. Zarit Burden Interview scores decreased, but this decrease was not significant (p=0.139; t=1.542). It was found that there was no significant difference between the pre-test and post-test scores of the control group on all scales (p>0.05). In the intergroup comparison, it was found that there was no statistically significant difference between the Beck Depression Scale (p=0.155; t=-1.450), Beck Anxiety Scale (p=0.351; U=183.50) and Zarit Burden Interview (p=0.928; t=0.090) posttest scores of the intervention and control groups.
Conclusion: It was determined that the use of virtual reality goggles helped to decrease the depression and anxiety levels of patient relatives. However, it was found that it did not have a significant effect on the burden of care.
