Abstract

The Key to Healthy Living: A Study on Attitudes Towards Physical Activity and Nutrition

Year 2025, Volume: 8 Issue: 2, 393 - 404, 28.06.2025

Abstract

The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between university students' attitudes towards healthy nutrition and their levels of physical activity, as well as whether this relationship differs by gender. The sample of the study consisted of 240 students studying at Karamanoğlu Mehmetbey University, Faculty of Sport Sciences. ‘Attitude Scale for Healthy Nutrition (ASHN)’ and “International Physical Activity Questionnaire-Short Form (IPAQ-Short Form)” were used as data collection tools. The scales were transferred to the online environment via Google Forms and delivered to the participants via e-mail. The data obtained were analysed using SPSS 25 package programme. According to the findings of the study, no significant difference was found between the body mass index (BMI) and metabolic equivalent (MET) values of female and male participants. However, it was found that female scored higher than male in the ‘poor eating habits (PE)’ sub-dimension (t = 2.037, p = 0.043, p <0.05). Additionally, a significant positive relationship was identified between ‘positive eating (PE)’ and MET (r = 0.191, p = 0.003), while a significant negative relationship was found between ‘attitudes towards nutrition (AN)’ and MET (r =-0.137, p = 0.034). As a result, a positive and significant relationship was found between healthy eating habits and physical activity levels. Additionally, the average BMI of female participants was lower than that of males, while the average MET values of male participants were found to be higher than those of females.
