In this article, the activities of the missionary organisation, ABCFM (American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions), in the
Ottoman Empire in the 19th century have been considered. Among these activities, printing, education and health-aid and care had a centrally important place. The Azariah Smith Memorial Hospital and Central Turkey College which had been established at Aintab (GaziantePp( by the American missionaries in 1870's were important in Turkish medical history because it was the first foreign medical school in Turkey. Today, this hospital maintains its fonction as a private health institution in this city.
