Abstract

THE ROLE OF THE LOGISTICS SECTOR IN EXPORT-LED SUSTAINABLE GROWTH STRATEGY: THE CASE OF TÜRKİYE

Abstract

With the acceleration of commercial and financial liberalization steps, the globalization period has begun to deepen. As a result of this deepening in the globalization period, there have been significant increases in the volume of both foreign trade and the logistics sector. Globalization can promote economic growth through foreign trade, capital flows and technological transfer. Therefore, the relationship between export activities, logistics, and economic growth has gained importance during the globalization process. This study differs from other studies by using the comparative empirical methodology with the export-led growth hypothesis and the sustainability process together. In this study, the export-led growth hypothesis and the role of the logistics sector in economic growth in the Turkish economy in the period 1990-2022 are investigated. In this context, economic growth, export, logistics, foreign direct investment and ecological footprint variables were analyzed. Traditional and current methods are used as empirical methods. In this context, ADF and PP unit root tests,as well as KPSS and Fourier KPSS stationarity tests, are utilized. Shin and Fourier Shin cointegration tests are used to determine the cointegrated relationship. FMOLS, DOLS and CCR methods are used as cointegration estimators. Preliminary findings highlight the importance of reducing environmental degradation in terms of sustainability of economic growth. Another finding has revealed the validity of the export-led growth hypothesis and shows that the logistics sector positively affects economic growth during the analyzed period in Turkey.
