Pleistosen – Holosen Geçişi Bağlamında Epi-paleolitik ve Mezolitik Terimleri Sorunu: Anadolu Örneği

Abstract

The Problem of Epipaleolithic and Mesolithic Terms in the Context of the Pleistocene-Holocene Transition: The Case of Anatolia

Year 2025, Volume: 1 Issue: 34, 29 - 44, 30.04.2025

Abstract

This study, which analyzes the emergence of the terms Epi-paleolithic and Mesolithic from their origins to the present day, suggests that the Pleistocene-Holocene transition played a significant role in the use of both terms. It is observed that the environmental changes experienced during this period are more evident in Europe, where the terms originated, and thus allow them to be accepted as cultural boundaries. On the other hand, when Southwest Asia is considered, the same transition period could not be defined earlier than the environmental continuities, which led to significant differences in the use of both terms. In the prehistoric research of Anatolia, which located between these two geographies, there has been a shift from a European-oriented perspective to a Southwest Asian-oriented chronological understanding during this process. It is also understood that the main determining factor in the current debates in Anatolia has evolved from the Pleistocene-Holocene boundary to the issue of the origin of the Neolithic period, and both terms have started to be discussed within this framework. Thus, there are still uncertainties regarding the use of both terms due to the ongoing debates about the origins of the Neolithic in some parts of Anatolia.
