Abstract

OPINIONS OF HEALTH PROFESSIONALS ABOUT BREASTFEEDING DURING PREGNANCY AND TANDEM BREASTFEEDING
ABSTRACT
Objective: This study was conducted to determine the opinions of health professionals (doctor, nurse and midwife) about breastfeeding during pregnancy and tandem breastfeeding.
Methods: The study designed as a descriptive and cross-sectional, was conducted with 192 participants between April 15 and June 15, 2020. The on-line survey link created by the researchers was shared with the participants via social media. Number, percentage, mean, standard deviation and Pearson Chi-square test were used to analyze the data.
Results: The average age of the participants was 38.03±8.01 years, 95.8% were women, 42.7% were midwives, and 34.3% had 21 years or more of professional experience. It was observed that 74.5% of health professionals recommended breastfeeding during pregnancy and 67.2% recommended tandem breastfeeding, 52.1% of them encountered at least one case of breastfeeding during pregnancy and 25% of them encountered at least one mother of tandem breastfeeding. A statistically significant difference was found between the professional groups of health professionals and their encounters with mothers who breastfeed in tandem (p<0.05).
Conclusion: Midwives and nurses' exposure to tandem breastfeeding mothers was found to be higher than other health professionals. It was concluded that the majority of the midwives and nurses participating in the study recommended breastfeeding during pregnancy and tandem breastfeeding, but the level of recommendation of pediatricians for breastfeeding during pregnancy was low, and the level of recommendation of tandem breastfeeding by obstetricians was low. It is recommended that health professionals be trained by taking into account evidence-based studies on breastfeeding during pregnancy and tandem breastfeeding.
