Abstract

Abstract

Close But Far Away: Being A Child Of A Nurse Parent During The Pandemic

ABSTRACT

Aim: This study was conducted to determine the perception of nurse parents about their children's COVID-19 pandemic and the impact of the pandemic on children.
Methods: This qualitative and descriptive study was conducted with nurses who have children aged 3-7 years and who were working during the pandemic period between January 1 and March 1, 2021. Parents were reached through snowball sampling method, and data collection process was completed when data saturation was reached (23 parents and 23 children). Data of the study were collected through semi-structured forms developed for parents and children. MAXQDA 2022 computer program was used for content analysis of the data.
Results: As a result of the interviews with parents and children, two themes were determined. The first theme, the changing parent-child relationship, it consists of 2 sub-themes: parent-child relationship before the pandemic and parent-child relationship after the pandemic. The second theme, the effects of the pandemic on children, consists of 4 sub-themes: the meaning of coronavirus for children, coronavirus in children's lives from the parents' eyes, children's requests from the authorities, and children's feelings and behaviors from the parents' eyes.
Conclusion: As a result of this study, it was determined that during the pandemic period, the time children spent with their nurse parents decreased, the nature of the relationship changed, and negative changes occurred in children's emotions and behaviors.
