Abstract

Substance abuse is a condition creating various and recurrent problems in the life of the person depending on the type and amount of substance used. Military service, on the other hand, is a legal obligation that men over the age of 20 in Turkey have to serve. Therefore, military service, as a process that substance user men have to experience, is a process that needs to be specially analyzed in terms of the dynamics of addiction. For this reason, the aim of this study is to understand how the process of military service, which is legal obligation of men over the age of 20 in Turkey, is experienced by a substance user and to explore how military service is related to addiction dynamics. This study analyzed how military service is related to the dynamics of substance use through the experiences of 8 substance users who have served in military in accordance with the qualitative research design. The results obtained were classified under 9 themes. Accordingly, while the military service is seen as a period of opportunity for the addict and his/her family to end the use, inescapable socialization in the military environment and the intense stress factor were determined as triggering factors for the users to use in the military environment. On the other hand, while it was reported that a supportive attitude was developed by the superiors/commanders towards the soldiers whose substance use behavior was known, it was understood that the users were considered as a risk factor in terms of possible negative consequences and assigned to appropriate tasks. Although the supervision/review/controlling system in the military makes it difficult to use substance, it was reported that there were attempts to abuse the duties assigned to substance user soldiers and exhibit using behavior. In conclusion, it is understood that the military service process has distinctive dynamics for a substance user, and it is recommended that this environment, dynamics and process experienced by users should be taken into consideration in treatment and fighting programmes for addiction.

Madde Bağımlılığında Çeşitli Süreçleriyle Zorunlu Askerlik Dönemini Anlamak: Nitel Bir Araştırma

Year 2025, Volume: 35 Issue: 2, 487 - 502
https://doi.org/10.18069/firatsbed.1572703
