Abstract

Urinary Incontinence in Individuals with Asthma

Year 2025, Volume: 8 Issue: 1, 38 - 47, 30.05.2025
https://doi.org/10.52538/iduhes.1606370

Abstract

Asthma is a chronic lung disease characterized by airway inflammation. Symptoms such as cough, dyspnea, wheezing, chest tightness, and dizziness are commonly seen in asthmatic individuals. Furthermore, urinary incontinence can be seen in these patients. Urinary incontinence known as urinary leakage is a health problem. Urinary incontinence can occur depending on many factors such as age, bladder muscle condition, and hormonal changes. Respiratory symptoms like cough seen in asthmatic individuals may increase the likelihood of these individuals experiencing urinary incontinence. However, the studies conducted on this subject to date have not yet been clear. Therefore, we aimed to provide information about urinary incontinence that can be seen in asthmatic individuals in this review. Electronic databases were scanned using the keywords “asthma, urinary incontinence, cough” between September 2024 and November 2024 through “Google Scholar, PubMed and Scopus”. Thirteen different studies investigating urinary incontinence in individuals with asthma were examined. Studies published in the last 22 years have been included in this review. These studies have examined the urinary incontinence of individuals with asthma or those showing symptoms of asthma. Studies conducted by experts in the field in different geographies, regardless of gender and age, show that individuals with asthma may be prone to urinary incontinence. This situation may afflict the quality of life of asthmatic individuals. Therefore, the relationship between asthma and urinary incontinence is an important public health issue that should be carefully examined.
