Kafein Tüketim ve Nikotin Bağımlılık Düzeyindeki Farklılıkların Hemşirelik Öğrencilerinin Uyku Kalitesine Etkisi

Year 2025, Volume: 10 Issue: 2, 261 - 268, 14.06.2025

Abstract

The Effect of Differences in Caffeine Consumption and Nicotine Dependence Levels on Sleep Quality of Nursing Students

Year 2025, Volume: 10 Issue: 2, 261 - 268, 14.06.2025

Abstract

Objective: To examine the effects of differences in caffeine consumption and nicotine addiction levels on the sleep quality of nursing students according to sociodemographic characteristics.
Material and Methods: The population of this cross-sectional study was all students (n=1142) who continued their education at Ege University Faculty of Nursing between April 2021 and July 2022. The entire populationwas reached, and the students who voluntarily agreed to participate in the study (n=553) constituted the study sample. Therefore, a voluntary sampling method was used. The "Caffeine Consumption Habits Form" was used to determine caffeine consumption levels, ‘along with’ the "Fagestrom Tolerance Test" by means of assess nicotine addiction, and the "Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index" through examine the factors affecting sleep quality. The examinations were conducted using Spearman correlation, linear regression, independent samples t-test, and one-way variance analysis.
Results: It was determined that the sleep quality of the smokers was higher than that of the non-smokers (p<0.05). It was determined that there was a significant and positive statistical relationship between the participants' Fagestrom Tolerance Test scores and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index scores (r=0.113; p=0.008) and that there was no statistically significant relationship between the amount of caffeine consumption and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index scores (r=0.033; p=0.445). It was determined that the regression analysis model created was statistically significant (F=7.303; p<0.05). It was founded that the participants' grade level, father's education, family income level, and smoking status had an effect on sleep quality.
Conclusion: Research results have shown that high caffeine consumption and smoking negatively affect sleep quality. It has been found that students who smoke have lower sleep quality, and there is a negative relationship between caffeine consumption and sleep duration and a positive relationship with sleep latency. In addition, it has been determened that some demographic factors (grade level, father's education, family income, drug use, gender) being affect sleep quality.
