Music, Memory, and Identity in Digital Ecosystems: Transformation of Archiving Processes and Social Reflections

Abstract

The widespread adoption of digital technologies and the increasing global reach of communication tools have transformed music from a mere art form into a dynamic platform for the continuous reconstruction of collective memory. This study examines how musical memory is shaped in the process of digital culturalization, the evolution of archiving practices, and the multifaceted impacts on social memory. Traditionally transmitted through oral traditions and limited analog recordings, musical heritage now circulates rapidly and widely within digital networks, enhancing intercultural interactions and increasing the visibility of local and national music on global platforms. This transformation not only expands the musical repertoire but also fosters the democratization of traditional memory, enables user participation in collective content creation, and facilitates the emergence of innovative musical genres. However, algorithm-driven digital platforms introduce a new form of "selective archiving," influencing visibility and discovery processes. The preservation, documentation, and dissemination of musical memory in digital environments benefit from big data analytics and artificial intelligence applications, offering an unprecedented archival perspective. Yet, these advancements also raise complex issues related to copyright, ethical considerations, and cultural authenticity. In this context, the study adopts an interdisciplinary approach to critically evaluate the impact of digital platforms on music and to explore the technological, sociocultural, and legal factors that will shape the future of digital musical memory.

Dijital Ekosistemlerde Müzik, Bellek ve Kimlik: Arşivleme Süreçlerinin Dönüşümü ve Toplumsal Yansımalar

Abstract

Dijital teknolojilerin yaygınlaşması, müziği yalnızca bir sanat dalı olmaktan çıkararak toplumsal belleğin sürekli yeniden inşa edildiği bir platforma dönüştürmektedir. Bu araştırma, dijital kültürleşme sürecinde müzikal hafızanın nasıl biçimlendiğini, arşivleme pratiklerinin nasıl evrildiğini ve bunun toplumsal bellek üzerindeki etkilerini incelemektedir. Geleneksel dönemde sözlü aktarım ve analog kayıtlarla sınırlı olan müzikal miras, dijital ağlarda hızla yayılmakta, kültürler arası etkileşimi artırırken yerel müziklerin küresel düzeyde görünürlüğünü sağlamaktadır. Bu dönüşüm, müzikal repertuvarın genişlemesi, geleneksel belleğin demokratikleşmesi ve yenilikçi türlerin ortaya çıkmasını mümkün kılmaktadır. Ancak, algoritmaların yönlendirdiği platformlar, keşfedilme süreçlerinde “seçici arşivcilik” mantığını yeniden üretmektedir. Dijital ortamda müziğin korunması ve paylaşılması, büyük veri analizi ve yapay zekâ uygulamalarının sunduğu imkânlarla genişlerken, telif hakları, etik ilkeler ve kültürel özgünlük gibi meseleler daha karmaşık bir hâl almaktadır. Bu doğrultuda, araştırma; dijital platformların müziğe etkilerini disiplinlerarası bir yaklaşımla değerlendirerek, dijital müzikal hafızanın geleceğini şekillendiren faktörleri bütüncül bir çerçevede ele almayı amaçlamaktadır.
