A Comparison of the Positions of Arctic and Mediterranean Passageways in Terms of China’s Sea Transportation Corridors

Abstract

The emergence of global security and geopolitics-centred challenges has prompted nations to seek alternative allies and new trade routes. In this context, security issues in the Mediterranean and the increasing accessibility of the Northern Sea Routes have heightened the Arctic region's strategic significance on the global stage. For China, in particular, both regions hold critical importance for successfully implementing its expansive Belt and Road Initiative. Challenges posed by traditional routes, such as the Malacca Strait and the Suez Canal, have led China to explore alternatives, positioning the Arctic as a region of growing geopolitical potential. China's increasing engagement in the Arctic is evident through its infrastructure investments and energy transportation collaborations, particularly with Russia. The partnership between China and Russia, especially in the realm of liquefied natural gas (LNG) transportation, underscores the prioritization of the Northern Sea Route in China’s trade strategy. Additionally, the technical and cost-related challenges of existing Mediterranean routes and security risks in the region further motivate China to focus on developing and operationalizing the Arctic passage. The Northern Sea Route offers significant advantages, including energy efficiency, economic cooperation, and a safer trade corridor, making it an increasingly attractive option for China’s international trade objectives. This article aims to highlight the future geopolitical significance of Arctic transit routes and provides a comparative analysis with established Mediterranean routes. By examining key geopolitical factors such as route security, energy efficiency, and economic collaboration, the study seeks to offer insights into which trade routes may be more advantageous for China. Furthermore, the potential impacts of Arctic and Mediterranean routes on global trade dynamics are assessed.

Çin'in Deniz Taşımacılık Koridorları Çerçevesinde Arktik ve Akdeniz Geçitlerinin Konumları Hakkında Bir Karşılaştırma

Abstract

Küresel güvenlik ve jeopolitik eksenli sorunlar, ülkelerin yeni müttefikler ve alternatif ticaret rotaları arayışına neden olmuştur. Bu bağlamda, Akdeniz’deki güvenlik sorunlarının yanı sıra Kuzey Deniz Rotaları’nın giderek daha erişilebilir hâle gelmesi, Arktik bölgesinin küresel ölçekteki stratejik önemini artırmıştır. Özellikle Çin, geniş kapsamlı Kuşak ve Yol Girişimi’nin başarılı bir şekilde sürdürülmesi için her iki bölgeyi de stratejik açıdan kritik bir konumda değerlendirmektedir. Malakka Boğazı ve Süveyş Kanalı gibi mevcut rotalarda yaşanan geçit problemleri, Çin’i alternatif güzergâh arayışlarına itmiş ve bu doğrultuda Arktik, jeopolitik bir potansiyel alana dönüşmüştür. Arktik bölgesine yönelik Çin’in artan ilgisi, altyapı yatırımları ve enerji taşımacılığı iş birlikleriyle somutlaşmaktadır. Özellikle Rusya ile sıvılaştırılmış doğalgaz taşımacılığı alanında kurulan ilişkiler, Kuzey Deniz Rotası’nın Çin için giderek öncelikli hâle gelmesini sağlamaktadır. Mevcut Akdeniz rotalarının maliyet ve teknik zorluklarının yanı sıra, bölgedeki güvenlik riskleri de Çin’i Arktik güzergâhına yönlendiren önemli etkenlerden birisidir. Kuzey Deniz Rotası, enerji tasarrufu, ekonomik iş birliği ve daha güvenli bir ticaret güzergâhı sunma potansiyeli ile Çin’in ticaret stratejisinde kilit bir rol üstlenmeye başlamıştır. Bu makale, Arktik geçiş rotalarının gelecekteki jeopolitik önemini vurgularken, bu rotaların yerleşik Akdeniz güzergâhlarıyla karşılaştırmalı analizini sunmaktadır. Güvenlik, maliyet, enerji verimliliği ve ekonomik iş birliği gibi jeopolitik faktörler ışığında, Çin’in hangi ticaret yollarını daha elverişli bulabileceğine dair kapsamlı değerlendirmeler yapılmaktadır. Bu bağlamda, Arktik ve Akdeniz rotalarının uluslararası ticaret üzerindeki potansiyel etkileri incelenmektedir.
