“Glass Sky” in Light of Glass Ceiling and Glass Cliff Phenomena: Representation Power of Women Pilots

Year 2025, Volume: 5 Issue: 1, 63 - 82, 30.06.2025

Abstract

This research aims to contribute to developing theoretical and applied solutions to understand the structural barriers that women face in the business world through the aviation sector. In this context, the glass ceiling phenomenon is first discussed, and it is emphasized that it refers to invisible barriers that prevent women from advancing beyond a certain level in their careers. This concept shows the inequalities in women's access to senior positions and that these inequalities continue despite legal regulations. In particular, concepts related to the glass ceiling, such as the "sticky floor", draw attention to the difficulties that women working in low-status jobs face in their careers. The fact that women disproportionately assume risky and insecure roles in leadership positions is discussed within the scope of the glass cliff phenomenon. This situation is associated with the increasing tendency of women to be assigned to leadership roles during times of crisis, and it is stated that these positions create higher pressure and responsibility on women. It is stated that the glass cliff is not limited to women, but also affects minority groups and varies according to the context. Finally, the concept of the glass sky is emphasized, and the inequalities that women face in certain professions such as the aviation sector are emphasized. In particular, the low representation rate of female captain pilots is explained by social prejudices and cultural factors. Accordingly, the number of studies in the literature that draw attention to the inadequacy of women's representation in these positions is quite low. This situation clearly reveals that more research is needed. In this context, the current study draws attention to the need to increase the visibility of women in the aviation workforce in the light of a new concept such as the glass sky. It is considered that raising awareness in this area is important both theoretically and practically.

Cam Tavan ve Cam Uçurum Fenomenleri Işığında “Cam Gökyüzü”: Kadın Pilotların Temsil Gücü

Year 2025, Volume: 5 Issue: 1, 63 - 82, 30.06.2025
