Stillbirth and Perinatal Bereavement: Awareness Levels of Midwifery Students in Türkiye

Abstract

Objective: This study aimed to assess the awareness levels of midwifery students regarding stillbirths and perinatal bereavement and to offer recommendations for improving their competencies in managing such situations.
Method: Designed as a cross-sectional and descriptive study, the research was conducted between February and May 2024. The study population included midwifery students from both public and private universities across Turkey. No sampling method was used; all students who voluntarily agreed to participate were included. Data were collected using a researcher-developed questionnaire titled “Determining the Awareness of Midwifery Students Regarding Stillbirths,” based on existing literature. The questionnaire was distributed via Google Forms through midwifery student groups on social media platforms such as WhatsApp and Instagram. Descriptive statistics (frequency and percentage) and chi-square tests were used for data analysis.
Results: A total of 1006 students participated in the study. Significant differences were observed in responses to questions about emotional reactions to stillbirths, behaviors during such events, and reflections afterward, based on students’ academic year, satisfaction with their education, exposure to stillbirths in their environment, and direct experience during training. Similar associations were found concerning their awareness of perinatal bereavement.
Conclusion: The results suggest that midwifery students’ attitudes and coping strategies related to stillbirths vary depending on their educational background and prior experiences. It is recommended to develop targeted educational programs to enhance students’ knowledge, emotional readiness, and practical skills in managing stillbirth and supporting perinatal bereavement.

Abstract

Amaç: Bu çalışma, ebelik öğrencilerinin ölü doğumlara yönelik farkındalık düzeylerini ve perinatal yas konusundaki bilinçlerini belirlemeyi amaçlamakta; ayrıca, bu süreçteki yetkinliklerini artırmaya yönelik öneriler sunmayı hedeflemektedir.
Yöntem: Araştırma, kesitsel ve tanımlayıcı türde planlanmıştır. Çalışmanın evrenini, Şubat 2024 - Mayıs 2024 tarihleri arasında Türkiye genelindeki devlet ve vakıf üniversitelerinin ebelik bölümlerinde öğrenim gören öğrenciler oluşturmaktadır. Örneklem seçimine gidilmemiş; araştırmaya katılmayı kabul eden tüm öğrencilere ulaşılması hedeflenmiştir. Veriler, literatür temelinde araştırmacılar tarafından oluşturulan "Ebelik Bölümü Öğrencilerinin Ölü Doğuma Karşı Farkındalıklarının Belirlenmesi" konulu anket ile toplanmıştır. Anket, Google Forms aracılığıyla hazırlanarak WhatsApp ve Instagram gibi sosyal medya platformları üzerinden ebelik öğrencilerine ait gruplarda paylaşılmıştır. Elde edilen veriler, sayı ve yüzdelik dağılımlar ile analiz edilmiş; kategorik veriler arasındaki ilişkileri incelemek için ki-kare (χ²) testi uygulanmıştır.
Bulgular: Araştırmaya 1006 ebelik öğrencisi katılmıştır. Katılımcıların “Ölü doğum ile karşılaşma düşüncesi size ne hissettirir?”, “Ölü doğum ile karşılaşma sırasında nasıl davranırsınız?” ve “Ölü doğum ile karşılaştıktan sonra nasıl düşünürsünüz?” sorularına verdikleri yanıtlar incelendiğinde, lisans sınıf seviyeleri, ebelik bölümünden memnuniyetleri, çevrelerinde ölü doğum vakalarıyla karşılaşma durumları ve eğitim sürecinde ölü doğum deneyimleyip deneyimlemediklerine bağlı olarak istatistiksel açıdan anlamlı farklılıklar tespit edilmiştir. Benzer şekilde, perinatal yas kavramına yönelik farkındalık düzeylerinde de bu değişkenlere bağlı olarak farklılıklar gözlemlenmiştir.
Sonuç: Bulgular, öğrencilerin eğitim düzeyi, bölüm memnuniyeti ve önceki deneyimlerine bağlı olarak ölü doğumlara yönelik tutumlarının ve başa çıkma stratejilerinin değiştiğini ortaya koymaktadır. Bu bağlamda, ebelik öğrencilerinin bu alandaki bilgi ve yetkinliklerini artırmaya yönelik eğitim programlarının geliştirilmesi önerilmektedir.
