Identity Development and Emotional Socialization in Turkish Culture: A Psychological, Philosophical, and Cultural Approach to Family Narratives

Year 2025, Volume: 4 Issue: 1, 31 - 48, 25.06.2025
https://doi.org/10.61158/saukad.1644508

Abstract

This study aims to understand the role of family narratives in the processes of identity development and emotional socialization within Turkish culture. The research examines how family narratives function in the construction of self-perception, cultural norm internalization, and social belonging, based on a theoretical and historical framework. The limited number of holistic studies in the literature addressing the psychological and sociological dimensions of this topic highlights the significance of the current study. The research is designed as a qualitative study. The data were collected through document analysis, examining traditional Turkish epics, mythological narratives, historical written sources, and modern digital storytelling examples. The data were interpreted using hermeneutic analysis, and the symbolic, cultural, and psychological functions of the narratives were thematically categorized. The findings reveal that family narratives guide the individual’s identity construction, facilitate the internalization of cultural values, and support emotional regulation skills. Furthermore, the study identifies clear distinctions between traditional and modern narratives in terms of collective and individual identity formation. Although the forms of narratives have transformed in the digital era, their fundamental role in identity development and emotional growth remains intact. These findings underscore the central role of family narratives in individuals’ psychological, cultural, and social integration and contribute to a deeper understanding of their socio-psychological impacts.

Türk Kültüründe Kimlik Gelişimi ve Duygusal Sosyalleşme: Aile Anlatılarına Psikolojik, Felsefi ve Kültürel Bir Yaklaşım

Year 2025, Volume: 4 Issue: 1, 31 - 48, 25.06.2025
https://doi.org/10.61158/saukad.1644508
