Abstract

Comparison of the Prevalence of Impacted Teeth in Patients with Different Starting Ages in the Same Population

Year 2025, Volume: 12 Issue: 1, 37 - 41, 21.04.2025

Abstract

Background: Studies about impacted teeth in different countries, races and populations are observed to have different starting ages or age ranges. This study aimed to compare the incidence of impacted teeth in patients groups with different starting ages at the same population.
Methods: This retrospective study was composed of 4 groups, each containing 400 different patient x-rays: 18 years old and over (Group 1), 22 years old and over (Group 2), 26 years old and over (Group 3) and 31 years old and over (Group 4). Panoramic radiographs of the patients were examined and impacted teeth were recorded. The impacted teeth, gender and ages of the patients were determined; the positions and numbers of impacted teeth were recorded. Statistical analyzes were performed with the SPSS 20 package program (SPSS Inc. version 20, IL, USA).
Results: The rates of impacted teeth in the groups were determined as 30.25%, 34.00%, 25.50% and 24.25%, respectively. A significant difference was found between the groups (p<0.05). The total number of impacted teeth in the groups decreased, as the average age of the groups increased. When comparing patients with impacted teeth in terms of gender, there was no difference between the groups among men, but a significant difference was found between women.
Conclusion: In this study, it has been determined that the incidence of impacted teeth decreases with increasing starting age. The reason for this decrease can be shown as the eruption of third molars can continue until the age of 26.
