Abstract
Hasan Onat is an academic known for his qualified studies on the History of Islamic Sects in general and on the Shia school in particular. He is known for his frequent emphasis on the importance of methodology in Islamic sciences. His important services to academics he has brought to the Turkish academic community are well-known. Unfortunately, we lost him in the recent covid-19 pandemic. Some of his works have been brought to readers by Pınar Publications. In this review article, we thought of discussing Onat's work titled Essays on Our Understanding of Religion. The work consists of five main sections: Human, religion, faith, the Quran and the Prophet. As in all his works, Onat argued in this one, with a supra-sectarian approach, that each school is a human formation that emerged later and cannot be identified with Islam. This method rejects the idealization of the early period, the sanctification of the past and the religionization of tradition by envisioning a structure that centers on the Quran. It points out that all of humanity needs the high values of Islam and the teachings of the Quran.

Öz
Hasan Onat genelde İslam Mezhepler Tarihinde özelde ise Şia ekolü üzerinde nitelikli çalışmalarıyla tanınan bir akademisyendir. İslam bilimlerinde sık sık metodolojinin önemine dair vurgularıyla bilinir. Türk akademi camiasına kazandırdığı akademisyenler açısından da önemli hizmetleri ehlince malumdur. Ne yazık ki geçtiğimiz covid-19 salgınında kendisini kaybettik. Bazı çalışmaları Pınar Yayınları tarafından okurlara kazandırılmıştır. Bu değerlendirme yazımızda Onat’ın Din Anlayışımız Üzerine Denemeler adlı eserini eler almayı düşündük. Çalışma beş ana bölümden oluşmaktadır: İnsan, din, iman, Kur’an-ı Kerim ve Hz. Peygamber başlıklarını taşımaktadır. Her çalışmasında olduğu gibi Onat, bunda da mezhepler üstü bir yaklaşımla her ekolün sonradan ortaya çıkmış beşeri oluşumlar olduğunu ve İslam’la özdeşleşemeyeceğini savunmuştur. Bu yöntem Kur’an’ı merkeze alan bir yapılanmayı öngörerek erken devir idealizasyonunu, geçmişi kutsallaştırmayı ve geleneği dinleştirmeyi reddetmektedir. İslam’ın yüksek değerlerine ve Kur’an’ın öğretisine bütün insanlığın ihtiyacı olduğuna işaret eder.
