Abstract

Exercise Habits and Social Media Usage Among Physically Disabled Athletes

Year 2025, Issue: 102, 416 - 433, 22.06.2025
https://doi.org/10.17753/sosekev.1631248

Abstract

This study aims to examine the effects of exercise habits on social media usage among physically disabled athletes. The research was conducted using a descriptive survey model, with 107 physically disabled athletes from across Turkey participating. Data were collected through a scale assessing demographic information and social media usage behaviors, which included sub-dimensions such as content creation, usage frequency, and social media addiction. Data analysis was performed using the SPSS program. It was found that demographic variables such as gender and type of disability did not have a significant impact on social media usage behaviors. However, weekly exercise frequency and daily exercise duration showed significant effects on social media content creation and usage frequency. Physically disabled athletes who exercised more frequently exhibited higher levels of content creation behavior. Additionally, it was observed that physically disabled athletes who accessed social media more frequently throughout the day had significantly higher levels of social media addiction. Based on the research findings, it can be suggested that social media has the potential to enhance the social participation of disabled individuals and support their exercise habits. However, further research is needed to prevent the negative effects of social media addiction.
