The Reality of the Modern Pentathlon

Year 2025, Volume: 8 Issue: 1, 155 - 170
https://doi.org/10.53025/sportive.1496985

Abstract

Modern pentathlon is an Olympic sport that combines five different modulations into one event. In addition to knowing the physical requirements of pentathletes in improving their performance, their mental needs should also be known. Therefore, this research aims to identify the metaphorical perceptions of modern pentathlon athletes concerning pentathlon concepts. A total of 38 athletes, 20 females and 18 males, with a license in the Modern Pentathlon discipline in Ankara 2021, participated in the study. The research was designed qualitatively, and the phenomenology method was used. While collecting the data for the study, a personal information form was applied to the athletes. The athletes were asked to complete the sentence "modern pentathlon is like ....../similar because..." in the form. The researcher personally applied the data collection tool. In addition, all participants took part in the study voluntarily. The data were analyzed using the content analysis technique. The data analysis followed naming, elimination, category development, ensuring validity and reliability, calculating the frequencies of the obtained metaphors, and interpreting stages, respectively. As a result, it was observed that athletes mostly used metaphors about the theme of "pentathlon as an element of balance and struggle”. The study is thought tocontribute to the trainers and federations to enable the athletes to reveal their potential and determine what they expect from the discipline.

Modern Pentatlon’un Gerçeği

Year 2025, Volume: 8 Issue: 1, 155 - 170
https://doi.org/10.53025/sportive.1496985
