Abstract

Metaphors can facilitate the understanding of abstract concepts by making them more concrete. The metaphorical meanings that parents attribute to the concept of volleyball can create the reasons why children start this sport. This study aims is to explore the metaphorical perceptions of parents who send their children to volleyball sports clubs about the concept of volleyball. The data of the study were collected through a structured form prepared in an electronic environment. The first part of the form included questions regarding the personal information of the participants. In the second part, the structure of ‘‘Volleyball is like …………….. Because ………..’’, which is frequently used in metaphor studies, was used. While the population of the study consisted of parents who sent their children to volleyball clubs in Şanlıurfa province, the study group consisted of parents of students who attended three different volleyball clubs in Şanlıurfa province. 67 parents, 39 mothers and 28 fathers, participated in the study. In the data analysis, parents’ metaphors regarding the concept of volleyball were listed as codes and themes. The data evaluation revealed that parents produced a total of 24 metaphors, 21 of which did not match the purpose of the study and these codes were excluded. These metaphors were grouped under 6 different themes. It was determined that the participants developed the most metaphors regarding the concept of volleyball under the themes of ‘‘Physical activity and fun’’, ‘‘Love and happiness’’ and ‘‘Togetherness and solidarity’’, while these themes were followed by the themes of ‘‘Health and relaxation’’, ‘‘Struggle’’ and ‘‘Desire to be free’’. One could argue that the fact that parents created the most metaphors under the theme of physical activity indicates that they primarily aim to move and include physical activity in their children’s lives from an early age while directing them to this sport. According to the findings in this study, It has been observed that parents have positive perceptions regarding the metaphor of ‘‘Volleyball’’.
Key Words: Volleyball, metaphor, parents, sport

Filenin Ardındaki Anlam: Ebeveynlerin Voleybola Dair Metaforik Algıları

Year 2025, Volume: 7 Issue: 1, 81 - 94, 30.06.2025
https://doi.org/10.52272/srad.1683789
