In the Footsteps of Aldo Leopold and Rachel Carson: Environmental Ethics: Environmental Ethics and Ecological Consciousness in Barabara Kingsolver’s Prodigal Summer
Abstract
This study examines Barbara Kingsolver’s Prodigal Summer (2000) within the framework of Aldo Leopold’s “Land Ethic” and Rachel Carson’s principles of environmental awareness and ecological sustainability, both of whom are among the most influential natural scientists of the twentieth century. The novel explores the interaction between humans and nature, emphasizing ecological balance, biodiversity, and sustainable agriculture. By illustrating the long-term consequences of human interventions in ecosystems, Kingsolver challenges anthropocentric perspectives and advocates for a more harmonious relationship between humans and the natural world. The analysis focuses on how the novel engages with key ecological debates, particularly the role of predatory species in maintaining ecological stability and the implications of industrialized agricultural practices. The discussion connects Kingsolver’s environmental themes with Leopold’s concept of the biotic pyramid and Carson’s critique of chemical interventions in agriculture. By highlighting the ethical and ecological dilemmas surrounding conservation and land use, the novel offers a narrative framework for examining contemporary environmental challenges.Considering the increasing urgency of ecological crises today, Prodigal Summer extends beyond literature to contribute to discussions on environmental ethics, sustainable land management, and biodiversity conservation. The novel serves as both a literary and academic resource, fostering critical engagement with issues of ecological responsibility and sustainability.

Aldo Leopold ve Rachel Carson'ın İzinde: Barbara Kingsolver'ın Bereketli Yaz Romanında Çevre Etiği ve Ekolojik Bilinç
Abstract
Bu çalışma, Barbara Kingsolver’ın Prodigal Summer (2000) romanını yirminci yüzyılın en önemli doğa bilimcilerinden olan Aldo Leopold’un “Toprak Etiği” ve Rachel Carson’ın çevresel fakındalık ve ekolojik sürdürülebilirlik ilkeleri çerçevesinde ele almaktadır. Roman, insan ve insan olmayan doğa arasındaki etkileşimi ekolojik denge, biyolojik çeşitlilik ve sürdürülebilir tarım bağlamında incelerken, insan müdahalesinin ekosistem üzerindeki uzun vadeli etkilerini tartışmaya açmaktadır. Kingsolver, insan merkezli doğa anlayışını sorgulayarak, doğayla daha uyumlu bir yaşam biçiminin gerekliliğini vurgulamaktadır. Bu inceleme, romanın ekolojik tartışmalara nasıl katkı sunduğunu değerlendirerek, özellikle yırtıcı türlerin ekosistem sağlığındaki rolü ve endüstriyel tarımın çevresel sonuçları gibi konulara odaklanmaktadır. Eserde ele alınan temalar, Leopold’un biyotik piramit anlayışı ve Carson’ın tarımsal kimyasallara yönelik eleştirileriyle bağlantılı olarak tartışılır. Romanın sunduğu etik ve ekolojik ikilemler, günümüz çevre sorunlarına yönelik düşünsel bir çerçeve sunmaktadır. Artan ekolojik krizler ışığında değerlendirildiğinde, Prodigal Summer, yalnızca edebi bir eser olarak değil, aynı zamanda çevre etiği, sürdürülebilir arazi yönetimi ve biyolojik çeşitliliğin korunması üzerine yürütülen akademik tartışmalara katkı sağlayan bir metin olarak öne çıkmaktadır. Roman, ekolojik sorumluluk ve sürdürülebilirlik konularında eleştirel bir farkındalık geliştirmeye yönelik değerli bir kaynak niteliği taşımaktadır
