Effects and evaluation of oral frailty ın geriatric individuals: A Review

Year 2025, Volume: 6 Issue: 2, 42 - 47, 29.05.2025

Abstract

Oral frailty is a concept that describes the deterioration in oral functions frequently seen in geriatric individuals. Some physical (physical frailty, osteoporosis, sarcopenia, muscle strength, physical functions) and psychosocial factors (depression, social isolation, cognitive functions) are closely related to oral frailty. Since oral frailty also leads to malnutrition, individuals become prone to systemic diseases and infections. Clinical indicators of oral frailty include the number of teeth remaining in the mouth, chewing and swallowing difficulties, dry mouth, articulatory oral motor skills, pain in the oral region, oral hygiene skills and oral health behaviors. Tools such as Oral Frailty Index-8, 5-item Oral Frailty Checklist and Oral Frailty Assessment Tool can be used in the assessment of oral frailty. Due to systemic risk factors, the assessment of oral frailty in routine oral and dental health screenings is of great importance in geriatric individuals.

Geriatrik bireylerde oral kırılganlığın etkileri ve değerlendirilmesi :Derleme

Year 2025, Volume: 6 Issue: 2, 42 - 47, 29.05.2025
