Thracian megalithic monuments, which have been recognized by archaeologists since the last century, are concentrated on the hills of Sakar, Stranca and the eastern Rhodop mountains. These are called either "dolmens" or "menhirs" depending on the type. Dolmens, or megalithic grave monuments found typically on the Stranca Mountains, consist of one or two closed monumental chambers oriented in a north-south direction. These chambers were connected through the so called "soul-hole" in the same direction. There is a dromos-like entrance in the south and a hill surrounding the dolmens. Within the framework of the University of Istanbul's program for "Thracian studies", rescue work as well as a restoration and conservation project was carried out at "Arpalık Mevkii Dolmeni" near the town of Lalapaşa. Following the research the dolmen became culturally protected. It is clear that a contemporary project for restoring and protecting a group of these monuments, will contribute to cultural tourism in the region
