KANLIGEÇİT AÇIK HAVA MÜZESİ: TRAKYA'DA BİR İLK TUNÇ ÇAĞ İÇ KALESİ

Year 2010, Issue: 8, 229 - 240, 01.09.2010

Abstract

KANLIGEÇİT OPEN - AIR MUSEUM: AN EARLY BRONZE AGE CITADEL IN THRACE

Year 2010, Issue: 8, 229 - 240, 01.09.2010

Abstract

Kanlıgeçit is located just to the south of the city center of Kırklareli on either site of the Kırklareli - Babaeski railway. The site has developed as an important Early Bronze Age center some 300 m to the east of Neolithic - Chalcolithic Aşağı Pınar mound. Excavations at Kanlıgeçit, initiated in 1994 have revealed in 1995 the first and only settlement in Thrace revealing megarons. The organization of the settlement, a citadel encircled by a fortification wall reflects the West Anatolian town model as best known from Troy. The settlement organization of Kanlıgeçit had been adapted from the Anatolian urban model. Likewise the strong presence of Anatolian pottery andfigurins also indicate the close interaction with the Anatolia. The high number of domestic horse bones in thefaunal assemblage of the megaron phase implies that the settlement might have been a terminal point of a caravan route coming in from Anatolia. What has been exposed at Kanlıgeçit, in spite of the relatively small size of its citadel is highly significant in understanding the happenings of Third Millennium in the contact zone of Anatolia with South-eastern Europe. To disseminate this knowledge to general public, as well as considerations to preserve the earliest megaron type of structures exposed in Thrace has led to develop an openair museum. This paper will discuss the concept and the implementation of the protection and display project being carried out at Kanlıgeçit citadel
