Challenges Experienced by SMA Patient’s Relatives and the Situation of Getting Support from Social Work
Abstract
SMA (Spinal Muscular Atrophy), one of the rare diseases, is defined as a muscle disease that affects the nerve cells in the spinal cord and restricts mobility. Patient relatives experience many problems due to deficiencies and difficulties in the treatment and support process as well as caregiving. The aim of this research is to reveal the difficulties experienced by relatives of SMA patients and their status of receiving and benefiting from social service units. In this context, the research was conducted with the survey model from quantitative research methods. In the study where 87 relatives of SMA patients were reached by using purposive sampling and snowball sampling method, an online questionnaire (Google Forms) was used. In the study, the opinions of SMA patient relatives that they experienced many difficulties such as anxiety, hopelessness, helplessness, social isolation, economic difficulties, were left alone and did not receive adequate support during the disease and treatment processes came to the fore. It was also revealed that they needed support from social service units but were largely unaware of the available support services.

Abstract
Nadir hastalıklardan biri olan SMA (Spinal Muskuler Atrofi) hastalığı, omurilikte bulunan sinir hücrelerini etkileyerek hareket kabiliyetini kısıtlayan bir kas hastalığı olarak tanımlanmaktadır. Hasta yakınları bakım vermenin yanında tedavi ve destek sürecindeki eksiklikler ve zorluklar nedeniyle birçok sorun yaşamaktadırlar. Bu araştırmanın amacı, SMA hasta yakınlarının yaşadıkları zorlukları ve sosyal hizmet birimlerinden destek alma ve yararlanma durumlarını ortaya çıkarmak olarak belirlenmiştir. Bu bağlamda araştırma nicel araştırma yöntemlerinden tarama modeli ile gerçekleştirilmiştir. Amaçlı örneklem ve kartopu örneklem yöntemi kullanılarak 87 SMA hasta yakınına ulaşılan çalışmada, çevrimiçi soru formu (Google Forms) kullanılmıştır. Çalışmada SMA hasta yakınlarının hastalık ve tedavi süreçlerinde anksiyete, umutsuzluk, çaresizlik, sosyal izolasyon, ekonomik zorluklar gibi birçok zorluk yaşadıkları, yalnız bırakıldıklarını ve yeterli destek göremediklerine dair görüşleri öne çıkmıştır. Ayrıca sosyal hizmet birimlerinden destek almaya ihtiyaç duydukları fakat mevcut destek hizmetlerinden büyük oranda haberdar olmadıkları ortaya çıkmıştır.
