Examining the Validity and Reliability Evidence of the Earthquake Fear Scale for High School Students

Abstract

Fear of earthquakes increases the likelihood of individuals developing various psychological disorders and negatively impacts their well-being. Following the major 2023 earthquake centered in Maraş, research on the adaptation and development of earthquake fear scales in Turkey accelerated. However, these studies have primarily focused on obtaining validity and reliability evidence for adult groups. Considering that adolescents are developmentally at risk in terms of fear, particularly earthquake fear, it has become clear that a measurement tool is needed to assess earthquake fear among high school students. This would help identify those affected by such fear and guide the planning and evaluation of appropriate intervention services. In this study, the validity and reliability of the Earthquake Fear Scale were examined in a sample of 484 high school students aged 14 to 18. The Earthquake Fear Scale (EFS), the Turkish Short Form of the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS21), and a Personal Information Form were used in the data collection. Confirmatory factor analysis to assess the construct validity of the EFS revealed that the single-dimensional and seven-item structure, consistent with the original scale, demonstrated a good fit. Item-total score correlations indicated strong item discrimination. In terms of criterion-related validity, low to moderate significant relationships were found between EFS scores and the total and subscale scores of DASS21. The Pearson correlation coefficient from the test-retest result and Cronbach's alpha coefficient provided reliable evidence for the EFS’ consistency among high school students. The independent samples t-test comparing EFS scores by gender showed that female students had significantly higher earthquake fear scores than male students. In conclusion, the findings suggest that the EFS has valid and reliable evidence for measuring earthquake fear levels among high school students in Turkey.

Deprem Korkusu Ölçeğinin Geçerlik ve Güvenirlik Kanıtlarının Lise Öğrencileri İçin İncelenmesi

Abstract

Deprem korkusu bireylerin çeşitli psikolojik rahatsızlıklar yaşama olasılığını arttırmakta ve iyi oluşu olumsuz etkilemektedir. 2023 Maraş merkezli büyük depremin ardından Türkiye’de deprem korkusu ölçekleri uyarlama ve geliştirme çalışmaları hız kazanmış; ancak bu çalışmalar yetişkin gruplar için geçerlik ve güvenirlik kanıtları elde etmeye odaklanmıştır. Ergenlerin gelişimsel olarak korku ve özelde deprem korkusu bakımından risk altında olduğu düşünüldüğünde deprem korkusu yaşayan lise öğrencilerini tespit etmek, bu öğrencilere uygulanabilecek müdahale hizmetlerini planlamak ve değerlendirmek amacıyla, lise öğrencilerinin deprem korkusunu ölçme üzere bir ölçme aracına ihtiyaç olduğu görülmüştür. Bu araştırmada Deprem Korkusu Ölçeği’nin geçerlik ve güvenirlik kanıtları 14-18 yaş aralığındaki 484 lise öğrencisinden oluşan bir grupta incelenmiştir. Verilerin toplanmasında Deprem Korkusu Ölçeği (DKÖ), Depresyon Anksiyete Stres Ölçeği (DASS21) Türkçe Kısa Formu ve Kişisel Bilgi Formu kullanılmıştır. DKÖ’nün yapı geçerliğini incelemek amacıyla yapılan doğrulayıcı faktör analizi sonucunda ölçeğin orijinaline uygun tek boyutlu ve yedi maddelik yapısı iyi uyum göstermiştir. Madde-toplam puan korelasyonları maddelerin iyi ayırt edebildiğine işaret eder düzeyde bulunmuştur. Ölçüt bağıntılı geçerlik kanıtı kapsamında DKÖ puanları ile DASS21’in toplam ve alt ölçek puanları arasında düşük ve orta düzeyde anlamlı ilişkiler tespit edilmiştir. Cronbach's alpha katsayısı ve test-tekrar test sonucu elde edilen Pearson korelasyon katsayısı DKÖ’nün lise öğrencileri için güvenirlik kanıtlarına sahip olduğunu göstermiştir. Cinsiyete göre DKÖ puanlarını karşılaştırmak amacıyla yapılan bağımsız örneklem t-testi sonucunda kız öğrencilerin erkeklerden anlamlı düzeyde daha yüksek deprem korkusu puanları aldıkları görülmüştür. Sonuç olarak, çalışmada elde edilen bulgular, DKÖ’nün Türkiye’de lise öğrencilerinin deprem korkusu düzeylerini ölçmek amacıyla kullanılmak üzere geçerlik ve güvenirlik kanıtlarına sahip olduğunu ortaya koymuştur.

Bu araştırmanın, Bursa Uludağ Üniversitesi Sosyal ve Beşeri Bilimler Yayın ve Etik Kurulunun 31.05.2024 tarihli oturumunda alınan 28. no’lu kararı ile verilen etik kurul izni bulunmaktadır. Bu araştırmanın planlanmasından, uygulanmasına, verilerin toplanmasından verilerin analizine kadar olan tüm süreçte “Yükseköğretim Kurumları Bilimsel Araştırma ve Yayın Etiği Yönergesi“ kapsamında uyulması belirtilen tüm kurallara uyulmuştur. Yönergenin ikinci bölümü olan “Bilimsel Araştırma ve Yayın Etiğine Aykırı Eylemler“ başlığı altında belirtilen eylemlerden hiçbiri gerçekleştirilmemiştir. Bu araştırmanın yazım sürecinde bilimsel, etik ve alıntı kurallarına uyulmuş; toplanan veriler üzerinde herhangi bir tahrifat yapılmamıştır. Bu çalışma herhangi başka bir akademik yayın ortamına değerlendirme için gönderilmemiştir.
