The Effect of Mental Fatigue Coping Strategies on Psychophysiological Responses and Technical Activity in Small-Sided Games in Volleyball

Abstract

Aim: The aim of this study is to examine the effects of various strategies–caffeine mouth rinse, carbohydrate mouth rinse, mindfulness exercise, and napping–applied following mental fatigue, on psychophysiological responses and technical performance during 4v4 small-sided volleyball games.
Methods: Sixteen young female volleyball players (age: 15.43 ±0.51 years) participated in the study. The games were played on a 4.5 m x 12 m court, for 4 minutes per set, across 4 sets, with 2-minute passive rest intervals, and with one-week intervals between each session. To induce mental fatigue, a 30-minute Stroop Test was administered via the Encephalapp Stroop mobile application prior to each game. Participants completed the Brunel Mood Scale before and after each game, as well as the Feeling, Motivation, and Arousal scales post-game. Technical performance indicators, such as successful and unsuccessful game setting actions, were analyzed through video recordings.
Results: It was determined that there was a statistically significant difference in successful and unsuccessful playmaking technical activities. In the pairwise comparison, there was no difference between the conditions in successful playmaking activity, while in unsuccessful playmaking activity, it was determined that caffeine, carbohydrate and sleep applications reduced unsuccessful technical activity according to different conditions.
Conclusion: While caffeine and carbohydrate applications can improve technical performance, it can be stated that taking a nap can also have positive effects.

Voleybolda Dar Alan Oyunlarında Zihinsel Yorgunlukla Başa Çıkma Stratejilerinin Psikofizyolojik Cevaplar ve Teknik Aktivite Üzerindeki Etkisi

Abstract

Amaç: Bu çalışmanın amacı, zihinsel yorgunluk uygulaması sonrası kafein ağız çalkalama, karbonhidrat ağız çalkalama, bilinçli farkındalık egzersizi ve uyku kestirmesi yöntemlerinin voleybolda 4’e 4 dar alan oyunu sırasında psikofizyolojik cevaplar ve teknik aktivite üzerindeki etkisini incelemektir.
Yöntem: Araştırmaya 16 genç kadın voleybolcu (yaş: 15,43±0,51 yıl) katılmıştır. Oyunlar, 1 hafta ara ile 4 dakika, 4 set ve 2 dakika pasif dinlenme ve 4,5m x 12m saha ölçüsünde oynatılmıştır. Oyunlar öncesinde zihinsel yorgunluk oluşturmak amacıyla, mobil uygulama üzerinden Encephalapp Stroop uygulaması aracılığıyla 30 dakikalık Stroop Testi uygulanmıştır. Katılımcılara, oyun öncesinde ve sonrasında Brunel ruh hali ölçeği, oyun sonrasında ise his, motivasyon ve uyarılmışlık skalalarını doldurtulmuştur. Başarılı ve başarısız oyun kurma gibi teknik aktivite cevapları video aracılığıyla analiz edilmiştir.
Bulgular: Başarılı ve başarısız oyun kurma teknik aktivitelerinde istatistiksel olarak anlamlı bir fark olduğu tespit edilmiştir. İkili karşılaştırmada başarılı oyun kurma aktivitesinde koşullar arasında fark bulunmazken, başarısız oyun kurma aktivitesinde ise, kafein, karbonhidrat ve uyku uygulamalarının farklı koşullara göre başarısız teknik aktiviteyi azalttığı saptanmıştır.
Sonuç: Kafein ve karbonhidrat uygulamaları teknik performansı iyileştirebilirken, uyku kestirmesinin de olumlu etkiler oluşturabileceği ifade edilebilir.
