Objectives:The aim of this cross-sectional study was to study the perception of COVID-19 and awareness of necessary precautionary measures against COVID-19, knowledge of symptoms, modes of transmission, preventive measurements, and method of gaining up-to-date accurate knowledge about these topics among Turkish dental staff.
Material and methods:An online survey(41 questions) was made on Google Forms Inc®. The survey was conducted within a population of Turkish dental staff between 2 November 2022 and 10 January 2023. The response obtained was entered and analyzed on SPSS version 22.
Results:A total of 448 dental workers participated in our study, of which 239 (53.3%) were dentists and 209 (46.7%) were auxiliary dental staff workers. The participants were questioned about certain precautionary measures against COVID-19, of which majority were answered correctly. However, only 31.5% participants chose the correct sequence of wearing of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines, while 60.3% correctly stated sequence of removing them. Among professional and auxiliary dental staff, N95/FFP2 mask were considered as the best protective mask as 75.7% and 78.9% respectively. Chi-square test was applied and p-value <0.05 was achieved.
Conclusion:Dentist mainly indicated that they were acquiring knowledge about COVID-19 from institutional trainings while the auxiliary dental staff used mainly information over social media. Participants showed adequate awareness regarding the necessary preventive measures of COVID-19. However, it was identified that more accurate and up-to-date information should be given by institutional training to eliminate the gap of information in some protocols.
