Objective: This research aims to examine the relationship between sexual dysfunctions, and depression and anxiety symptoms and emotion regulation difficulties in married women within the framework of the Hierarchical Taxonomy of Psychopathology (HiTOP) Model.
Method: The research was performed with 295 married women with an average age of 37.06 years (SD = .50). The research is an analytical, cross-sectional survey study, and the data were collected online via social media between November 6, 2021 and April 10, 2022. Data collection tools were the Female Sexual Function Index, Female Sexual Distress Scale-Revised, Inventory of Depression and Anxiety Symptoms-II and Difficulty in Emotion Regulation Scale. Descriptive analysis, Pearson correlation, t-test, hierarchical regression analysis and structural equation modeling were utilized in the analyses.
Results: Analyses indicate some significant relationships were understood to be between the research variables. The variables, with varying sexual function scores, were physical discomfort, menopouse, regular mensturation and sexual discomfort of the spouse, while their sexual distress scores differred in psyhiatric diagnosis and sexual discomfort of the spouse. Hierarchical regression analysis revealed that sexual function and sexual distress were explained by depression and anxiety symptoms and difficulties in emotion regulation. This structure of the internalizing spectrum consisting of three dimensions was supported by the structural equation model and difficulties in emotion regulation were understood to predict the internalizing spectrum.
Conclusion: In this research, the internalization spectrum within the HiTOP Model framework was determined to consist of sexual problems, distress and fear sub-dimensions. Difficulties in emotion regulation may be a risk factor of the internalizing spectrum.
