Introduction
This study seeks to explore Ahmet Cevdet Pasha’s perspectives on history, society, and religion within the framework of his intellectual worldview. The research is grounded in two main objectives. The first is to construct a comprehensive portrait of Ahmet Cevdet Pasha by examining his life, intellectual milieu, works, and the various state duties he undertook. The second objective is to analyze the relationship he established between religion and society from the perspective of the sociology of religion, drawing on his approach to history, social thought, and his views on religion and Islam.
Ahmet Cevdet Pasha's Approach to History
Historiography stands out as one of Ahmet Cevdet Pasha's foremost areas of expertise. He regards history as both a repository of knowledge and a source of moral and practical lessons, emphasizing the critical importance of accurately recording events as they occurred. According to Cevdet Pasha, the historian's primary duty is to provide valuable and truthful information, thoroughly analyze the genuine causes of events that may serve as lessons for all, and present these findings in a clear and accessible manner for a broad audience. A historian, he argues, must maintain objectivity, differentiate between truth and falsehood, and discern what is essential from what is superfluous. Furthermore, the historian should uncover the true causes of events and analyze these events in comparison with one another.
In addition to serving as the official historian of the state through his contributions to the field of history, Ahmet Cevdet Pasha not only documented historical events but also analyzed their causes and interconnections in detail. Moreover, he situated his perspectives within the framework of the philosophy of history (Bolay, 2009, p. IX).
Ahmet Cevdet Pasha’s Idea of Society
Ahmet Cevdet Pasha asserts that the fundamental motivation behind people's desire to live together is the aspiration to avoid harm and achieve mutual benefits. While he enumerates the numerous advantages that coexistence brings to society, he also highlights that an increase in societal welfare—one of these benefits—may lead to certain negative consequences.
Like the stages in the life of human beings, Ahmet Cevdet Pasha divided society into stages. Just as individuals exhibit different behaviors and have varying needs at different stages of life, states also possess distinct needs and behaviors depending on the circumstances they encounter throughout their existence. According to Ahmet Cevdet Pasha, progress in both material and spiritual cultural elements is contingent upon the level of civilization. He argues that advancements in science and art emerge when a civilization reaches its peak maturity and decline as the civilization deteriorates (Cevdet Pasha, 2019b, p. 304).
Religion/Islam in the Thought of Ahmet Cevdet Pasha
According to Ahmet Cevdet Pasha, religion is “only a bond between Allah and His servants. Other believers bear witness to this only by looking at the visible situation.” Ahmet Cevdet Pasha argues that the foundation of Islam is built on two pillars: One is the acceptance of the oneness of God and the other is the acceptance of Muhammad (pbuh) as the messenger of God. Ahmet Cevdet Pasha emphasizes that the purpose of man’s creation is to worship the God who created him. Ahmet Cevdet Pasha argues that the characteristic of being a Muslim must be reflected both in one’s personal life and social practices. Therefore, a Muslim is expected to demonstrate this characteristic.
Religion-Society Relationship in the Thought of Ahmet Cevdet Pasha
Ahmet Cevdet Pasha asserts that religion plays a significant role not only in the lives of individuals but also in shaping society and state governance. He emphasizes that religion is an indispensable element for maintaining social order and ensuring effective state administration. According to Cevdet Pasha, the religious foundations and cultural attributes that set Ottoman society apart from other societies facilitated the rapid spread of Islam across the world and its dominance over an expansive geography. Religious practices—ranging from obligatory acts of worship to moral principles and ethical behaviors—were instrumental in advancing the Ottoman state, particularly during its peak periods. For instance, he highlights the sociological importance of zakat—one of the five pillars of Islam—arguing that it helps bridge the gap between the rich and poor within a society. He further notes that the social benefits of zakat were especially evident during the golden age of the Ottoman Empire.
