The Effect of Competitive Strategies on Financial Performance: A Case of Family Business

Öz

Companies that exist today are making efforts to further improve their business performance with the help of competitive strategies in order to be able to outdo their competitors in intense competition conditions and to maintain their activities in the long term. A significant portion of small and medium-sized businesses both in the world and in Turkey are family businesses. Businesses that gain competitive advantage also have an advantageous position in terms of financial performance. The study carried out here is to reveal the effect of competitive strategies implemented by family businesses on financial performance. Based on this purpose, the first 500 and second 500 family businesses of the Istanbul Chamber of Industry (ICI) were taken as a basis, and analyzes were carried out for a total of 310 family companies. As a result of the correlation analysis, there is a 63.7% positive correlation between competitive strategies and financial performance. As a result of regression analysis, competitive strategies affect financial performance positively (β=0.692; p<0.01). Cost leadership strategies affect financial performance positively (β=0.654; p<0.01). Differentiation strategies affect financial performance positively (β=0.633; p<0.01). Focusing strategies positively affect financial performance (β=0.505; p<0.01). The highest impact on financial performance has been cost leadership strategies.

Rekabet Stratejilerinin Finansal Performansa Etkisi: Aile Şirketleri Örneği

Öz

Günümüzde varlığını sürdürmekte olan işletmeler, yoğun rekabet koşullarında rakiplerine karşı üstün gelebilmek ve faaliyetlerini uzun vadede devamlı kılabilmek adına, rekabet stratejilerinden yardım alarak işletme performanslarını daha da geliştirebilmek için çaba harcamaktadır. Hem Dünya’daki hem de Türkiye’deki küçük ve orta ölçekli işletmelerin ciddi bir bölümü aile işletmesidir. Rekabet üstünlüğü elde eden işletmeler, finansal performansları konusunda da avantajlı konuma sahip olmaktadırlar. Burada gerçekleştirilen çalışma, aile işletmeleri tarafından uygulanan rekabet stratejilerinin finansal performansa etkisini ortaya koymaktır. Söz konusu amaçtan yola çıkarak İstanbul Sanayi Odası (İSO)’nun İlk 500 ve ikinci 500 aile işletmeleri temel alınmış, toplam 310 aile şirketi için analizler gerçekleştirilmiştir. Korelasyon analizi sonucunda, rekabet stratejileri ile finansal performans ile %63.7 pozitif yönlü ilişkilidir. Regresyon analizi sonucunda, rekabet stratejileri finansal performansı pozitif yönde etkilemektedir (β=0.692; p<0.01). Maliyet liderliği stratejileri finansal performansı pozitif yönde etkilemektedir (β=0.654; p<0.01). Farklılaştırma stratejileri finansal performansı pozitif yönde etkilemektedir (β=0.633; p<0.01). Odaklanma stratejileri finansal performansı pozitif yönde etkilemektedir (β=0.505; p<0.01). Finansal performans üzerinde en yüksek etki maliyet liderliği stratejileri olmuştur.
