Objective: This study was planned to investigate the effect of pressure ulcer education on the knowledge and attitudes of physiotherapy and rehabilitation students.
Methods: A total of 53 students with mean age of 21.05±1.19 years (16 males, 37 females) studying in the department of physiotherapy and rehabilitation were included in the study. The physical characteristics of the students, their previous encounters with pressure ulcers, and whether they received pressure ulcer education were evaluated. The “Attitude Scale for Pressure Ulcer Prevention” and the “Knowledge Assessment Scale for Pressure Ulcer Prevention” were used to determine students' attitudes and knowledge towards pressure ulcer prevention.
Result: It was determined that 85% of the students did not follow developments to prevent pressure ulcers and had not participated in practices to prevent the development of pressure ulcers. While there was a significant improvement in the attitude scale scores towards pressure ulcer prevention after education compared to before education (p0.05), there was no significant improvement in the scores for the knowledge assessment scale for pressure ulcer prevention (p>0.05).
Conclusion: While education (4 weeks) about pressure sores did not cause any change in the knowledge levels of the students, it provided positive development in their attitudes. Curricula related to pressure sores in physiotherapy and rehabilitation undergraduate education should be reviewed. Updating the learning materials and courses in accordance with national and international guidelines is important to ensure the development of knowledge about pressure sores.
