Substance addiction causes increasingly complex psychological, social and economic problems at the individual and societal levels due to increased accessibility, accelerating the process of social disintegration and becoming a major public health issue on a global scale. In this context, mindfulness-based strategies stand out as an effective method to curb impulsive behaviors, increase self-control and end the cycle of addiction by enabling individuals to experience the present moment objectively. These approaches, which support cognitive and emotional regulation, help individuals cope with the stressors that trigger substance use by strengthening their inner awareness. The principles of mindfulness put forward by Kabat-Zinn offer a functional model for rebuilding the psychosocial balance of individuals with its applicable features in addiction treatment.
This article aims to examine the impact of mindfulness-based approaches in substance addiction treatment, their application potential in the field of social work and their contribution to individual recovery processes. The role of mindfulness methods in strengthening individuals' psychosocial well-being, increasing their stress tolerance, and enhancing their capacity to manage addiction in the long term is discussed; the possible contributions of integrating these approaches into the social work system are evaluated in the context of interdisciplinary collaboration.
