Abstract
Objective: The etiology of suicidal behavior is heterogeneous and complex. Therefore, the difficulty experienced by clinicians in the evaluation of suicide cases is obvious. In this study, psychiatry consultations requested by Tokat Gaziosmanpaşa University Emergency Clinic were retrospectively analyzed. The aim of this study was to determine the sociodemographic and clinical characteristics of patients evaluated for suicidal behavior.
Material and Method: Descriptive statistics on sociodemographic and clinical characteristics were applied with the data obtained from the consultation file information. Group comparisons were made for the characteristics of the groups recommended for inpatient or outpatient follow-up in the psychiatry clinic after psychiatrist evaluation.
Results: As a result of the evaluation, the patients were predominantly young and female. The presence of psychotic symptoms and history of psychiatric treatment were found to be determinants in the inpatient group compared to the outpatient group.
Conclusion: Suicidal behavior is a common reason for admission to emergency departments and descriptive studies in this field will help clinicians in the evaluation phase.
