In recent years, food waste has emerged as one of the most pressing global issues requiring urgent action and solutions. Although the literature includes numerous studies on the stages at which food waste occurs, the factors influencing waste, and the amount of waste, there is a lack of sufficient research on the motivations behind preventing food waste. This study aims to identify individuals' motivations for preventing food waste and to determine whether these motivations differ based on personality traits. In this context, a survey form was created using the Food Waste Avoid Motivation Scale developed by Ribbers et al. (2023) and the Five-Factor Personality Scale by Rammstedt and John (2007). The survey was administered to students enrolled in the Tourism Management and Culinary programs at the undergraduate and associate degree levels at Isparta University of Applied Sciences during the 2023-2024 academic year. A total of 261 responses were analyzed using the SPSS 25 statistical software package. The analysis results revealed that individuals’ motivations to prevent food waste could be categorized into four dimensions: Social, Environmental, Financial, and Moral. The highest perceived motivations were in the moral and environmental dimensions, while the lowest were in the social dimension. Furthermore, participants with a conscientious personality trait were found to have higher moral, financial, and environmental motivations compared to those with other personality traits. This study contributes to the literature not only by being one of the few studies addressing food waste but also by comparing food waste prevention motivations based on individuals’ personality traits.
