The Anthropocene in The Age of Post-Truth: A Critical Analysis of Climate Change-Denying Leadership Discourses

Öz

In the post-truth era, certain scientific facts can be distorted and presented to the public through traditional or social media in line with political and economic interests. In this context, discourses that deny or trivialize climate change can easily spread among large segments of society. This phenomenon not only deepens human-induced environmental crises in the Anthropocene era but also undermines the effectiveness of policies aimed at combating climate change. This study examines the climate change discourses of leaders in the post-truth era within the context of the Anthropocene. The discourses of Donald Trump, Jair Bolsonaro, Giorgia Meloni, and Viktor Orbán are analyzed using Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA). The analysis reveals the populist and manipulative rhetoric employed by these leaders regarding climate denial and environmental policies. The study addresses Trump's “hoax” discourse, Bolsonaro's Amazon policies, Meloni's stance against EU climate regulations, and Orbán's emphasis on national sovereignty. The findings illustrate how leaders’ political discourse on climate change is shaped by specific political and cultural contexts.

Post-Truth Çağında Antroposen: İklim Değişikliğini Reddeden Lider Söylemleri Üzerine Eleştirel Bir Analiz

Öz

Post-truth çağında bazı bilimsel gerçekler politik ve ekonomik çıkarlar doğrultusunda geleneksel veya sosyal medya aracılığıyla halka çarpıtılarak sunulabilmektedir. Bu bağlamda iklim değişikliğini inkâr eden veya önemsizleştiren söylemler geniş kitlelere kolaylıkla yayılabilir. Bu durum Antroposen çağında bir taraftan insan kaynaklı çevresel krizlerin daha da derinleşmesine yol açarken öte yandan iklim değişikliğiyle mücadele politikalarını da etkisiz hale getirmektedir. Bu çalışma post-truth çağında liderlerin iklim değişikliği söylemlerini Antroposen bağlamında incelemektedir. Donald Trump, Jair Bolsonaro, Giorgia Meloni ve Viktor Orban’ın söylemleri Eleştirel Söylem Analizi (ESA) yöntemiyle analiz edilmiştir. Bu analiz liderlerin iklim inkârcılığı ve çevre politikalarına dair popülist ve manipülatif söylemlerini ortaya koymaktadır. Çalışmada Trump’ın “aldatmaca” söylemi, Bolsonaro’nun Amazon politikaları, Meloni’nin AB iklim politikalarına karşı tutumu ve Orban’ın ulusal egemenlik vurgusu ele alınmıştır. Sonuçlar, lider söylemlerinin politik ve kültürel bağlama göre nasıl şekillendiğini göstermektedir.
