Identification of Ferdinando Carulli’s method books for six-string guitar and examination of his studies
Öz
Ferdinando Carulli (1770-1841), one of the leading guitar virtuosos and composers of the 19th century, made significant contributions to music education. He authored eleven guitar instructional books and one solfège education book.
The study examines which of Carulli’s guitar instructional books fit the definition of a “method” and identifies which of the selected method books were written for the six-string guitar. The method books identified for the six-string guitar are; Opus 27: “Methode Complete Pour Guitare Ou Lyre”, Opus 71: “Seconde Suite A La Methode”, Opus 192: “Supplement A La Methode Ou La Premiere Année d’Etude De Guitare”, Opus 270: “L’anti-Méthode”.
In this paper, technical exercises are categorized separately for the right and left hands and visualized through tables based on etude numbers, making it easier for performers to identify and practice specific techniques.
The study is significant as it includes the first-ever analysis of Carulli’s Opus 270, “L’anti-Méthode” in the literature and introduces new classifications such as “melody-accompaniment” and “agility” alongside existing technical classifications. The research follows a descriptive approach, utilizing the document analysis method, one of the qualitative research techniques.
The evaluation indicates that the most frequently used techniques in Carulli’s etude books are arpeggios, melody accompaniment, and scale technique, showing that the composer emphasized both guitar education and musical expression.

Ferdinando Carulli’nin altı telli gitar için yazdığı metot kitaplarının belirlenmesi ve etütlerinin incelenmesi
Öz
19. yüzyılın başlıca gitar virtüözü ve bestecileri arasında yer alan Ferdinando Carulli (1770-1841) müzik eğitimi alanında önemli çalışmalar yapmıştır. Bestecinin on bir tane gitar eğitimi kitabı ve bir solfej eğitimi kitabı vardır.
Carulli’nin gitar eğitimi kitaplarının hangilerinin metot tanımına uyduğu, belirlenen metot kitaplarından hangilerinin altı telli gitar için yazıldığı çalışmanın problemini oluşturur.
Bestecinin altı telli gitar için yazdığı metot kitapları; Opus 27: “Methode Complete Pour Guitare Ou Lyre”, Opus 71: “Seconde Suite A La Methode”, Opus 192: “Supplement A La Methode Ou La Premiere Année d’Etude De Guitare” ve Opus 270: “L’anti-Méthode” olarak belirlenmiştir. Belirlenen bu kitaplarda teknik çalışmalar sağ ve sol el olarak ikiye ayrılmış ve etüt numaralarına göre tablolarla görselleştirilmiştir. Böylece icracının çalışmak istediği tekniği kolaylıkla tespit etmesi amaçlanmıştır.
Çalışma, Carulli’nin Opus 270, “L’anti-Méthode” adlı metot kitabının literatürdeki ilk analizine yer vermesi ve bilinen teknik sınıflandırmalara “melodi-eşlik” ve “ajilite” ek tanımlamalarının eklenmesi nedeniyle önem taşımaktadır. Çalışma, betimsel bir araştırma olup, nitel araştırma yöntemlerinden doküman analizi yöntemi kullanılmıştır.
Yapılan değerlendirme sonucunda Carulli’nin etüt kitaplarında en çok kullanılan tekniğin arpej, melodi eşlik ve gam tekniği olması, bestecinin gitar eğitimi kadar müzikal anlatıma da önem verdiğini göstermektedir.
