DECIVILIZING AND MORAL PANIC IN JOSÉ SARAMAGO’S BLINDESS NOVEL: A SOCIOLOGICAL ANALYSIS

Öz

osé Saramago’s Blindness examines the disintegration of social order caused by a sudden blindness epidemic. This study analyses, through the lens of this novel, how societies react in times of crisis and how quickly social structures can deteriorate. The novel shows how, following the epidemic, societal norms disappear, individuals revert to primal instincts for survival, and violence becomes widespread. This disintegration results from a weakening of social control and the loss of normative values. As trust diminishes, social bonds break, and violence becomes more visible in public spaces, leading to the rapid collapse of social order. Saramago’s work reveals how modern societies, when faced with sudden threats, tend to react excessively, accelerating social decay. The novel also explores how survival struggles within group dynamics activate collective defence mechanisms in times of chaos. In this study, these processes of social breakdown are evaluated through the concepts of decivilising processes and moral panic, offering a dramatic portrayal of the fragility of social order and human responses during crises.

Öz

José Saramago’nun Körlük romanı, ani bir körlük salgınının toplumsal düzende yarattığı çözülme süreçlerini ele alır. Bu çalışma, kriz anlarında toplumların nasıl tepkiler verdiğini ve sosyal düzenin nasıl hızla çökebileceğini ilgili roman üzerinden analiz etmektedir. Roman, salgının başlamasıyla birlikte toplumsal normların ortadan kalktığını, bireylerin hayatta kalmak için ilkel içgüdülerine döndüğünü ve şiddetin yaygınlaştığını gözler önüne serer. Toplumsal yapıların bu şekilde çözülmesi, bir anlamda sosyal kontrolün zayıflaması ve normatif değerlerin yitirilmesiyle sonuçlanır. Salgın boyunca bireysel/toplumsal güvenin kaybolması, bireyler arasındaki bağların kopması ve şiddetin kamusal alanda görünür hale gelmesi, toplumsal düzenin hızla kaybolmasına neden olur. Roman, modern toplumların karşılaştıkları ani tehditler karşısında aşırı tepkiler verdiğini ve bu tepkilerin sosyal çözülmeyi hızlandırdığını gösterir. Ayrıca, bireylerin grup dinamikleri içinde hayatta kalma mücadeleleri, kaos ortamında kolektif savunma mekanizmalarının nasıl işlediğini göstermektedir. Böylelikle insan doğasının kriz anlarındaki tepkileri ve toplumsal düzenin ne kadar kırılgan olabileceği dramatik bir şekilde sunulmaktadır. Romanda betimlenen bu toplumsal çöküş süreçleri, bu makalede, uygarlıktan sapma ve ahlaki panik kavramları çerçevesinde değerlendirilmiştir.
