Miracle Tree: Moringa Oleifera and Effects on Health

Yıl 2025, Cilt: 16 Sayı: 1, 134 - 143, 25.04.2025

Öz

Moringa oleifera which has been used to treat many diseases in some societies from ancient times to the present, contains high amounts of protein, several minerals, vitamins and antioxidant compounds. It is also called the "miracle tree" because it is believed to have a healing effect and used in treating many diseases among the people. The most used parts of the plant are the leaves, which are rich in bioactive compounds such as vitamins, carotenoids, polyphenols, phenolic acids and flavonoids. Although M. oleifera has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antidiabetic, antihypertensive effects, it has been shown to improve hepatic and renal functions. In addition, it protects against cancer and has the effect of increasing breast milk. The positive effects of M. oleifera on health are explained by its high bioactive molecule content. M. oleifera also contains essential amino acids. Especially the leaves can be used to meet the nutrients such as protein, vitamins and minerals that are deficient in diets in developing countries. This review aims to examine the plant M. oleifera, which has many beneficial effects on health.
