Empathy and Belief in A Just World as Predictors of Prejudice Towards Crime Victims: Example of Social Work Organizations

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the relationship between empathy, just world beliefs and the prejudices of social work professionals towards crime victims. In the study employing the relational survey model, the socio-demographic information form, the Victim Perceptions Scale, the Toronto Empathy Scale and the Just World Belief Scale were utilized. A total of 408 individuals were included in the study, selected through the convenience and snowball sampling techniques. The data were analyzed using multiple linear regression. The findings indicate a relatively low level of prejudice towards crime victims among professionals, with a moderate levels of unjust world beliefs, high levels of empathy and unjust world beliefs. Although empathy and just world beliefs are associated with perceptions of crime victims, the belief in an unjust world is not related to the dependent variable. Empathy and just world beliefs explain 36% of the observed prejudice towards victims. Empathy has a negative effect on prejudice towards victims, while just world belief has a positive effect. The findings highlight the importance of training to increase empathy and reduce the influence of unjust world beliefs, both during undergraduate and postgraduate training, in order to reduce prejudice among professionals who may work with crime victims

Mağdurlara Yönelik Önyargıların Belirleyicileri Olarak Empati ve Adil Dünya İnancı: Sosyal Hizmet Kuruluşları Örneği

Abstract

Bu çalışma sosyal hizmet alanında çalışan profesyonellerin empati, adil dünya inancı ve mağdurlara yönelik ön yargıları arasındaki ilişkiyi ortaya koymayı amaçlamaktadır. İlişkisel tarama modelinin kullanıldığı araştırmada sosyo-demografik bilgi formu, Mağdurlara Yönelik Algılar Ölçeği, Toronto Empati Ölçeği ile Adil Dünya İnancı Ölçeği kullanılmıştır. Araştırmaya kolayda ve kartopu örnekleme tekniğiyle ulaşılabilen 408 kişi katılmıştır. Verilerin analizinde çoklu doğrusal regresyon analizinden faydalanılmıştır. Bulgular meslek elemanlarının mağdurlara yönelik ön yargılarının düşük, empati düzeylerinin yüksek, adil dünya inançlarının orta ve adil olmayan dünya inançlarının yüksek olduğunu göstermektedir. Empati ve adil dünya inancının mağdurlara yönelik önyargılarla ilişkisi varken, adil olmayan dünya inancı alt boyutunun mağdurlara ilgili önyargılarla ilişkisi saptanmamıştır. Empati ve adil dünya inancı mağdurlara yönelik ön yargının %36’sını açıklamaktadır. Empati mağdurlara yönelik ön yargıyı negatif, adil dünya inancının ise pozitif yönlü etkilemektedir. Bulgulardan hareketle sosyal hizmet kuruluşlarında çalışma potansiyeli bulunan meslek gruplarının mağdurlarda ikincil mağduriyet oluşturmamaları için hem lisans sürecinde hem de mesleğe başladıklarında empati düzeylerini yükseltmek ve adil dünya inançlarını düşürmek amacıyla eğitimler vermenin önemini ortaya koymaktadır.
